Answer your customers with AI without losing your voice: Wix Smart Chat

A visitor lands on your site at 9:30 pm. They want to know whether you deliver to their town or whether there is a slot left on Saturday. Nobody answers, they close the tab and look elsewhere.

Since March 2026, Wix has been replacing its old chat with Wix Smart Chat, a tool that mixes AI answers and human replies. Set up properly, it answers on your behalf without sounding like a robot. Set up badly, it makes up your prices.

Here is how to tell the two apart.

What changed on the Wix side in 2026

Three things to remember, taken from the Wix Help Center. First, the old Wix Chat, the one where you replied yourself from your inbox, will soon no longer be supported: it is no longer offered in the App Market and no longer receives updates.

Second, the AI Site Chat launched at the end of 2024 has been folded into a single product, Wix Smart Chat, which combines an AI that can answer 24/7 and a manual chat where your team replies from the Wix Inbox.

Third, installation is free: you get 50 AI conversations included, after which you need a paid plan, while manual chat stays free with no limit.

The wider context: on 11 August 2026, Wix announced Symphony, a standalone platform of AI agents meant to run the daily operations of a small business. It is too early for us to recommend it to a neighbourhood shop.

Smart Chat, on the other hand, is concrete, already installed on sites we manage, and it is the tool we are talking about here.

One warning, written in plain words by Wix: the assistant reads the public data on your site and "may generate and present inaccurate or misleading information". Wix takes no liability for it. On the App Market, the app shows a rating of 2.8 out of 5 from 150 reviews.

Read those reviews and the split is clear: people who spent two hours configuring it are happy, people who installed it and forgot about it complain that it quotes prices or handles requests nobody asked it to handle.

What the assistant can do, and what it cannot

What it does well: answer questions whose answer is already on your site. It relies on your pages, your product or service catalogue, and the rules you write in the dashboard.

It can suggest a product, send the link to the right page, reply in the visitor's language, and you decide slot by slot who answers: the AI, you, or both. Two separate avatars show the visitor whether they are talking to a machine or a person.

What it does not do: it does not place an order or a booking for you. It guides the visitor to the page where they complete it themselves. It does not replace Wix Automations or members chat either, both absent from this version. And it will never know what you have not told it.

A telling example. A beauty salon we work with counted its contact messages over one month: six questions out of ten were about Saturday opening hours, the price of a common treatment, or whether you can come without an appointment. All of these answers are on the site, and the AI handles them without a mistake.

The question "can you quote me for a wedding?" has no ready-made answer: that is where the assistant must hand over, and that is exactly what you need to teach it.

Keeping your voice: the ten-rule method

The setting that matters most is called "Identity & style". Describe the way you speak in three sentences: formal or casual, short sentences, no superlatives, a greeting that sounds like you. If you say "hi, let's have a look at that together" to customers at the counter, write it exactly like that.

Then write ten knowledge rules. Ten is our magic number: ten rules usually cover eight questions out of ten. Opening hours, delivery times and fees, returns, payment methods, how to book, area served, parking, what to bring, what is quote-only, and who to contact for everything else. A rule is one clear sentence, not a paragraph.

Add three restriction rules: never a price for a bespoke service, never a firm delivery promise, never medical or legal advice. In those cases the assistant offers the contact form or the booking page. Also exclude the pages that have no business in its answers: legal notices, old promotions, the careers page.

The "AI Data Coverage" page in the dashboard shows you exactly what it has read.

Finally, test before you publish. The dashboard's test environment takes your questions and lets you rate each answer. Ask it your twenty most frequent questions, fix, repeat. Allow two hours the first time, then twenty minutes a month to reread conversations in the Inbox, where AI replies and yours are clearly told apart.

What it costs and how long it takes

Free to install, 50 trial AI conversations, then a plan whose price is shown in your Wix dashboard (Wix does not publish it in its help pages, and it depends on the quota you choose). For a shop with 300 visitors a month, 50 conversations are roughly one month of use: enough to judge on evidence before paying a cent.

If your site gets fewer than 100 visitors a month, keep the free manual chat and work on your traffic first.

Time-wise: half a day for the full setup, rules and tests included, if you start from an up-to-date site. If your online hours or prices are wrong, fix them first: the assistant repeats what it reads, and a chat that gives a wrong price costs more than no chat at all.

In the jungle of AI tools, this is the one piece of advice that never gets old: clear the ground before you plant.

Where to start

  1. Open the App Market from your Wix dashboard, search for Wix Smart Chat and add it to your site. Pick "Manual Chat" to begin: the AI indexes your site in the background without showing anything.

  2. Reread your opening hours, prices, delivery and contact pages. Fix anything wrong or outdated, then publish.

  3. In the Smart Chat dashboard, fill in "Identity & style" in three sentences, then write your ten knowledge rules and three restriction rules. Exclude the pages that do not belong.

  4. Test with your twenty most frequent questions, rate the answers, adjust the rules. Schedule the slots: AI alone in the evening and at weekends, AI plus you during the day.

  5. Switch to AI mode, publish the site, and reread the conversations every month to add a rule or two.

What we take away

Wix Smart Chat is neither a gimmick nor a miracle: it is a night-shift employee who reads your site word for word. It is worth exactly what your pages and your ten rules are worth. Configured in half a day, it answers the repetitive questions, captures out-of-hours requests and hands over whatever deserves a human.

Left on factory settings, it will speak for you, and not necessarily in your interest.

Want us to set it up? We install Wix Smart Chat on your site: rules written with you, restrictions, tests on your real customer questions and slot scheduling. Book a 30-minute slot so we can look at your site together, or discover our Wix services.
