The 10 Wix settings most of our clients have never opened

Your Wix site is live, it looks good, and you haven't opened the dashboard in months. That is the case for most of the sites we take over.

The trouble is that the settings that matter don't show on screen. Here are the ten we check first, and that you can set yourself in a single morning.

Why nobody opens these menus

At launch, everyone looks at the design. The Settings menus stay as they were, with default values designed for every site in the world, so for none in particular.

When we audit a site from our client base, we always open the same screens. And we almost always find the same gaps.

Wix also updates its dashboard regularly: menus move or get renamed. One more reason to take a look now and then, even on a recent site.

None of these settings requires technical skills. You mostly need to know where to click, and why.

Allow 10 to 15 minutes per setting, so about two hours for the full list. It is a light clearing of the undergrowth, not a redesign.

Identity: what Google and your customers see first

Four settings decide how your business appears, in search results as well as when a link is shared on WhatsApp.

  • Business Info: name, logo, address, phone number and opening hours, reused by Wix apps (bookings, invoices, forms).

  • Language & Region: site language, time zone, currency and date format.

  • Favicon: the small icon in the browser tab, instead of the default Wix logo.

  • Social share image: the visual shown when someone shares your page on social media.

The time zone looks harmless. It stops being harmless as soon as you take appointments or send scheduled emails.

A situation we run into regularly: an independent therapist receives booking confirmations that are one hour off. The site has been set to an American time zone since it was created.

The social share image works for you every time a link is sent. Without it, the social network picks a random image from the page, often a slice of banner or a cropped logo.

SEO: the two settings that protect your traffic

The first is the Wix SEO Setup Checklist. It walks you through connecting your site to Google Search Console and submitting your sitemap.

Wix explains it step by step in its help center: connecting your site to Google in the SEO Setup Checklist. Without that connection, you don't know which searches your site shows up for.

The second is 301 redirects. Every time you rename a page or delete a product, the old address returns an error unless something is in place.

A deleted page with no redirect is traffic thrown in the bin. The Wix URL Redirect Manager sends the old address to the new one in two clicks.

A typical case: a home decor shop renames all its categories in the spring. The result is around thirty broken addresses, still visible in Google months later.

Compliance and tracking: cookies and analytics

The seventh setting is the cookie banner. In France, the CNIL requires refusing to be as easy as accepting, and advertising trackers must wait for the visitor's consent.

Wix offers a built-in banner, to enable and customise in the privacy settings. The steps are detailed in the article displaying a cookie banner on your site.

The eighth is marketing integrations: Google Analytics, Meta Pixel or Google Tag Manager. Declaring them in this menu, rather than pasting code by hand, ties them to the visitor's consent.

We still often find tracking codes pasted into the site header years ago. Some run without consent, others no longer measure anything at all.

Security: who holds the keys to the site

Ninth setting: roles and permissions. Your designer, your intern or your agency don't need your password.

Invite each person with a role that fits their job. The day the collaboration ends, you remove access in one click, without changing all your credentials.

Tenth setting: 2-step verification on your Wix account. It asks for a code on top of your password, by text message, email or authenticator app.

It is the quickest setting on the list, and the one that spares you the worst. Wix details the procedure in its guide to 2-step verification.

Where to start

No need to do everything at once. Here is the order we recommend to our clients.

  1. Turn on 2-step verification for your account, it takes five minutes.

  2. Check Business Info and Language & Region, especially the time zone.

  3. Run the SEO Setup Checklist and connect Google Search Console.

  4. Review the cookie banner and the list of your marketing integrations.

  5. Finish with the favicon, the social share image and your collaborators' roles.

Put a date in your calendar and do the round again once a year. Settings don't move on their own, but your business does.

What we take away

A well set up Wix site doesn't show, but you feel it: appointments at the right time, clean shared links, traffic that doesn't leak away.

These ten settings cost nothing and take one morning. It is the best effort to result ratio we know of on a site that is already live.

No time to dig through the menus? We run this ten setting check on your site and send you a report of everything we fixed. Book a call here, or explore our other services on our Wix agency page.
